English Oral Examination

The teacher calls for a volunteer,
To speak about a picture,
And be judged against a set of standards,
On how well we ‘conversed’.

The teacher stares down,
And listens,
Ticking off a checklist,
I know not of.

And I find myself,
Speaking to her hair,
Or eyeing the bird that flew past.

They urge for engagement,
And we tried,
But a bunch of pre-made questions were thrown at us,
And we find ourselves,
Pressed to satisfy.

It is like,
Ballroom dancing without a partner,
How one -sided.

And this is what they call,
Spoken ‘Interaction’.
